Determining a Dog’s Age

The "one dog year equals seven human years" method is outdated and less accurate. A more precise estimate considers the breed and size of the dog, along with physical and behavioral clues:

  • Teeth: Permanent teeth grow by 7 months, dull and slightly yellow by 1–2 years, and show wear or disease by 5–10 years.
  • Senior Aging Signs: Graying hair, cloudy eyesight, hearing problems, stiff joints, reduced activity, and behavioral changes such as anxiety or confusion.

In terms of human years:

  • The first year of a dog’s life equates to about 12–15 human years.
  • The second year equates to 9 human years.
  • Each additional year equals about 4–6 human years.

Veterinarians use physical indicators like teeth, fur, body shape, and eyes to provide a more accurate age estimate.

For detailed advice on your dog's health and aging, consulting with a veterinarian is always recommended.
